If you have a business idea that you want to explore, or if you already have a business and need some help moving things to the next level, perhaps I can help.Your challenge as a small business owner is that you often have no one to strategize with or to help you see the bigger picture.
Strangely, I do this so often and without thinking about it that I forgot to explain it here.
I have experience helping people see the next steps needed to take their business from concept to reality, or from where it is currently to the next stage. What I offer to small businesses is a mix of consulting and coaching.
What’s the difference? When I coach, I do not give advice or offer my opinion. As I consultant I rely on my experience in business to suggest what steps are needed and /or give advice. If you are trying to get a small business going, you quite often don’t know what to do, and that is how my services are different. Obviously, I work from a coaching perspective because it influences my communication style, but we’ll decide together whether you need a coach or a consultant for your business.
We can work together in person (geographic location limited, on the phone, via Skype, or entirely through email conversations. You can choose whichever option works for you.
Why Should You Hire Me?
I have a unique range of experience which means that I bring more than my coaching skill set. I read books on marketing and leadership and I have always been fascinated by business success. That isn’t all that unique but when you combine that fascination with my other interests (positive psychology, learning, happiness, the psychology of change, etc); I bring a unique perspective to situations. This is because my professional background is different from all of these.
I was a designated management accountant (Canadian CPA – CMA) for over 30 years (and I technically still am as I transition to full-time self-employment). I worked in a variety of traditional accounting roles with titles such as Accountant, Controller, Director of Finance and had the duties that went with those roles. However, in most of those roles, I ended up being involved in aspects of the business that were far outside the traditional role.
It always happened organically at each job because I am naturally curious about business and I need to understand the real nuts and bolts of whatever business I work for. As I asked questions and interacted with my coworkers, they would eventually begin to seek me out to chat about their challenges. I would ask questions and bring my perspective to the situation. Looking back, I realize that I was coaching and consulting naturally. I just wanted to understand their problem and help them find solutions.
I realized just how much of an “abnormal accountant” I was when I was asked to sit on a marketing strategic committee when I worked for a large organization!
This led to my first dive into consulting over ten years ago. For five years I worked as a consultant and did projects for large companies, government organizations, small businesses, and I even managed musicians!
I have worked with entrepreneurs to talk through expansion plans, and I’ve also listened and prodded (as needed) to help them decide that it was time to let aspects of the business die.

To be perfectly clear, I do not offer accounting or tax preparation services although I can help you find the right solution for those.
